Around 20 years ago machining workshops were pondering over whether they should switch over to CNC (Computer Numeric Controlled) from manual mills. Those who didn’t jump on the CNC bandwagon were eventually left behind . Today, the scenario for 5 axis milling and machining technology is somewhat similar. Many industries today, particularly those where a high degree of precision is required such as medical devices, optical equipment, aircraft, transport, aerospace and satellites have already turned to 5 axis technology as a way of speeding up manufacturing ability as well as increasing repeatable accuracy. The ability to produce complex machine parts offered by 5 axis machining allows for reduced labor time and tooling costs which lead to higher precision as well as lower costs per part. In this article we will take a look at the various advantages and benefits associated with 5 axis machining and why PRV Engineering invests and continues to invest in this technology on behalf of our clients.
The Advantages of 5 Axis Machining
Some of the reasons PRV Engineering uses 5 Axis Machining are –
Higher Machining Productivity – One of the major advantages associated with 5 axis machining is its ability to produce complex shapes, difficult angles and undercuts using a single setup. This provides higher machining productivity when compared to producing parts using a series of setups, while reducing the costs and time of production significantly. Also, the chances of incorrect alignment are higher with multiple setups every time the parts are moved.
Increased Tool Life – This machining technology allows the usage of shorter cutting tools as the head can be easily lowered onto the job and the cutting tool can be oriented to the surface. This allows for higher cutting speeds without putting too much load on the cutting tool, thereby reducing breakages and increasing tool life.
High Quality Surface Finish – Another major advantage of this technology is that using shorter cutters reduces tool vibration which occurs when machining deep cavities or cores using 3 axis machines. The reduced tool vibration results in high quality surface finish, thereby reducing and even eliminating the requirement of hand finishing, which is time consuming.
Complex Parts – This machining technology allows for machining of extremely complex parts and fixtures which otherwise would have to be cast. In fact this machining approach proves to be much faster and cheaper for small runs as well as prototypes.
As you can see from the video below (you can find further videos on our own dedicated YouTube channel here) PRV Engineering continually invests in the latest technology to ensure we provide the highest quality of service to our clients.
