The UK is set to benefit from a £53m investment by the government to build five new digital manufacturing research centres. The funding has been made possible through the national Made Smarter programme. This collaboration between the UK government and industry supports the development and use of emerging technologies. But what is digital manufacturing and how can companies use it to their advantage?

The world is advancing at a rapid pace and not only in engineering and manufacturing but also in education. Thanks to better and more widespread internet access and emerging technologies, the way children, youth and adults will learn in the future is changing. In this article, we look at education and how social, economic, and technological changes will revolutionise how we learn at school or university.

Solar power seems the most likely renewable energy solution when looking into the future. This conversion of energy turns sunlight into electricity, either directly through photovoltaics (PV), indirectly using concentrated solar power or a combination. But now, Caltech is taking this a step further by collecting solar power in space and sending it to Earth but before we get into Caltech’s Space Solar Power Project (SSPP), let’s take a quick look at what solar power is.

Although the construction of steel buildings dates back to the 20th century, it wasn’t until World War II that it became common practice. After the war ended, steel buildings expanded significantly as steel became more readily available. Today, companies like PRV Engineering benefit from modern technology, state-of-the-art machinery and computer-aided design software that have taken steel fabrication to the next level.

Additive Manufacturing In Bridge Construction

Amsterdam is now home to the world’s first-ever 3d printed bridge constructed by four robots in just six months. The additive manufacturing project was a collaborative effort between MX3D, a Dutch start-up focusing on 3D metal printing, researchers at Imperial College London and The Alan Turing Institute.

Aside from strikingly good looks, what comes to mind first when you think of a hypercar or Formula One? If you answered sleek, aerodynamic styling you’d be right and that usually involves a big rear wing. However, Peugeot’s latest hybrid hypercar doesn’t have a rear wing which many consider a massive achievement.

The British Army is home to some of the world’s most advanced technologies and now, new armoured vehicles are next on the list.  This is a historic event for the UK Defence industry as it’s the first time in several years that any new armoured vehicles will be manufactured in the UK.

Technology is advancing at a rapid pace across all sectors and that includes construction. We’ve known for some time that a 3D printed building will make headlines once again and now, PERI GmbH is in the process of building Germany’s first 3D printed residential structure in Beckum, North Rhine-Westphalia. It’s only a short five weeks away from completion and it’s said to be a showstopper.
