Attracting engineers into the industry has been a topic of conversation for many engineering employers in recent years. Many will tell you that engineers are hard to come by and that schools and colleges are doing precious little to help the situation. Sir James Dyson has even gone on record to express his concerns.

Here at PRV Engineering we have seen at first hand how apprentice engineers and young qualified engineers are hard to come by. As managing director Simon Jones said, “It’s becoming increasingly difficult to get youngsters interested in engineering and as a result, we find it increasingly hard to recruit the right kind of person.”

Whatever next? First, they put a man on the moon, then came the Internet and now, driverless cars could be on the UK’s public roads by next year!

Since the story broke, most of us have either commented on or thought about the concept and how it will or might not, work.

Of course, there are significant legal barriers which must be overcome before this can happen. However, once those hurdles have been negotiated, we should all brace ourselves for the latest innovation in the automobile industry.

PRV engineering has always been intrigued and excited by McLaren’s latest developments, new models and design improvements.

Little wonder, therefore, that here at PRV we were all intrigued, once again, to see McLaren under the spotlight with the unveiling of the new McLaren 650S GT3 at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The latest generation track race car is a design success story and has been built to contest the GT3 championships across the globe from the 2015 season. And despite having significant shoes to fill, McLaren GT’s top designers have made sure that it’s built to achieve exactly that.

Scammers try every avenue available to obtain money from people and companies. Today we experienced the dark side of the web first hand.

In this morning’s post was a letter returned by the Royal Mail as address unknown, it was addressed to one of our customers, but obviously at an incorrect address. When my FD opened it she was stunned by the contents. It was fake letter that looked as though it was from us informing our customer that we had changed our bank details and that all future payments should go to this new account. It was even signed by someone pretending to be the company secretary.

We have obviously informed all our customers that this is a scam along with the police in both Cardiff and London who are investigating the origin.

Here at PRV Engineering we have always kept a keen eye on developments in the aerospace industry.

Therefore, it was with great interest when recently, we read about the first attempt to circumnavigate the globe in an aircraft powered entirely by the sun.
After 12 years of research and testing, the Swiss engineering team Solar Impulse has unveiled the craft that will undertake the mission, next year.
Having already demonstrated the ability to fly non-stop for 24 hours in their first solar powered aircraft, engineer Andre Borschberg and psychiatrist Bertrand Piccard have unveiled a second, more efficient single-seater craft that will enable them to take turns flying for up to five consecutive days and nights at a time — including flights over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Although forms of rail transport can be traced back to 600BC when the ‘rutway’ was built to assist with transportation, it is widely accepted that railways, as we know them, have been in existence for almost 200 years.

Born of the Industrial Revolution, trains powered by locomotives were the fulfilment of the dreams of their creators.

Today’s railway system differs greatly to the days when steam trains could be seen chugging around the industrial heartland of Britain, transporting coal, iron and wood.

Further changes and development have been in the pipeline for some time, with Britain’s railways poised to undergo a major programme of development.

It’s a fact that around 20% of global final energy consumption comes from renewable sources with more than 10% of all energy from traditional biomass, being used for heating.

At national level, at least 30 countries already have renewable energy contributing more than 20% of energy supply. Furthermore, national renewable energy markets are projected to continue to grow strongly in the coming decade and beyond.

Overheating is an issue within industry, not just for those workers struggling to cope with the increasing temperatures that even a British summer can bring, but for the industry’s machinery too.

Whilst the rising heat and humidity levels create physical discomfort, they represent real danger for the electronic components of machine tools, computers and other shop equipment. Overheating and humidity can cause switch contacts to become oxidized and begin arcing. It can also cause decreased insulation resistance, leading to shorts, loss of conductivity and changes in resistance.

PRV-Engineering is constantly moving with the times and as part of the company’s recent £1.25million investment, managing director Simon Jones has added a vertical travelling column machining centre with full 5-Axis Synchronous milling ability.

Five-sided machining, also known as 3+2, is the process of setting up a part once and using a machine like the Mazak VTC800/30SR to machine five sides instead of machining the part one side at a time using a conventional 3-Axis machining centre.

So much has been said about the future of engineering in recent times. Many industry leaders, including the likes of Sir James Dyson, have painted a bleak picture. However, there is some welcome good news for engineers, from within the rail industry.

With Britain’s railways currently undergoing the biggest programme of investment since the Victorian age, 2014 appears to be an exciting year for the rail industry.

In March, Network Rail unveiled plans to invest £38bn in the UK’s tracks and stations, while Transport for London and the Department for Transport also confirmed the extension of the Crossrail project west to Reading.
