If your business is involved in any form of manufacturing structural steelwork products, then you should be aware of BS EN 1090-1 CE Marking. Without this certification, you cannot legally run a steel manufacturing business as all products within the scope of this standard must be CE Marked when released to the market.

This harmonised European standard covering fabricated structural steelwork came into effect on 1 July 2014. BS EN 1090-1 involves the requirements for assessing and verifying product or service conformity in executing any steel and aluminium structures details.

The Importance Of BS EN 1090-1 CE Marking

Replacing the Construction Products Directive (CPD), the most significant change is that CE Marking is now mandatory for all construction products where the product is released to market within the UK or wider European Economic Area (EAA). These products are further covered by a harmonised European standard (hEN) or European Technical Assessment (ETA).

Any business producing steel or aluminium construction products sold in the UK or the wider EAA has a legal requirement to CE Mark all products. To do this, you need help from what’s called a Notified Body (NB).

This means that the product delivered to your client in return for payment or free of charge must be accompanied by a physical document, with the official CE logo. This document should have specific information regarding the individual product and the manufacturer in question.

Are All BS EN 1090-1 CE Markings The Same?

CE Marking is the conformity marking for products sold in the European Union. It has been a common requirement for things such as toys and electrical goods for many years. It consists of the CE-Logo and, if applicable, the four-digit identification number of the Notified Body involved in the assessment procedure.

Concerning EN 1090-1, CE Marking is a self-declaration that requires the sign-off by a representative who takes full responsibility for the information declared within the CE Mark. To produce the CE Mark, there is also a third-party component that must be fulfilled. This refers to the assessment and certification of your Factory Production Control (FPC).

What Is Factory Production Control (FPC)?

Your FPC is a collective term relating to all the activities that influence the conformity of your manufactured product. As part of the FPC, all of the procedures, inspections and processes must be carried out to a documented system and requires written evidence stating how you manufacture your products from concept and design to testing and delivery.

How To Get Certified

Only a Notified Body (NB) can provide certification as the CE Marking process is based on requirements that supersede all other national standards. This means when a certification body carries out assessments for CE Marking activities, it does so on behalf of the European Commission (EC).

To regulate this assessment, the EC mandates that all assessment bodies performing FPC assessment must also be accredited by UKAS which gives them Notified Body status. Remember, only Notified Bodies can assess and provide certification of your FPC in accordance with EN 1090.

As such, to produce your own CE Mark, you must to first have your FPC assessed and gain the appropriate certification from a Notified Body. Visit en1090cert.org to start the certification process where your company will be assessed against the EN1090 requirements.

Structural Steel Fabrication and CE Marking

BS EN 1090-1 is recognised by the Construction Products Regulation and consists of three parts, namely EN 1090-1 (Structural components: CE-Marking), EN 1090-2 (execution of steel structures) and EN 1090-3 (execution of aluminium structures).

At PRV Engineering, we’ve been supplying steelwork and fabrication services to the construction industry for more than twenty years. We manufacture and install high-quality products including bespoke platforms, balconies, balustrades and handrails in mild steel and stainless steel.

In addition to being fully certified in BS EN1090-1:2009 +A1:2011, other benefits of working with us include the following:

  • No longer have to choose between limited standard-sized fabrication templates
  • You can tailor the design and project to your exact requirements
  • Exercise closer control over project costs
  • You can tailor build projects and choose preferred specialist contractors
  • Stop paying lead contractors’ mark-ups on services they sub-contract
  • Achieve completion deadlines

Final Thoughts On BS EN 1090-1 CE Markings

CE Marking of all construction products is mandatory in all EU Member states. Businesses involved in structural steel fabrication of components must demonstrate product compliance with BS EN 1090-1. They must also prove product conformance through mandatory CE marking.

Fabrication compliance allows you to continue manufacturing and selling your products within the EU. Companies who fail to conform to these standards and trade without a legitimate CE Mark could face criminal charges.

We offer a complete service from the design and structural details to the manufacture and installation. This includes all groundworks, amenities and electrical installations. All materials are manufactured and CE marked to BSEN 1090 – Ex3.
