You may already know what electroplating is but what you may not know is how it works. Electroplating can be described as a common metal finishing or improving process used in a number of industrial applications.

It’s not new though as the earliest form, which became the modern electroplating process, occurred in the early 19th century. At this time, the development of bigger electric generators meant higher currents which drastically improved the process. With the advancement of industrial and manufacturing practices over the past two hundred years, this process has greatly evolved.

There are a few reason for plating or coating busbars. Cosmetic reasons or provision of insulation are a couple but the most common reason for coating busbars is to inhibit corrosion.

Busbars are commonly made from copper, which in itself is quite resistant to corrosion but busbars are often used in environments where higher levels of protection are needed. Over time, copper oxidises and can impact the surfaces conductive properties. So plating or coating busbars, not only reduces corrosion but also improves the longevity and conductive properties of the item.

In the majority of instances a busbar is a better choice for conduction needs however the uptake of busbars as standard parts has been somewhat slower than one might imagine when looking at all the benefits they bring. The benefits over cabling in most instances are quite well documented.

  • Versatility both in terms of the various connections and the ease with which busbars are installed and changed means they are quicker and easier to slot into design work
  • Physical costs of installing busbars are lower because they are easier to install and wiring errors are eliminated
  • Busbars can be made to order and between the various different material make-ups there are busbars fit for almost any purpose
  • Busbars allow better thermal management both due to their inherently better connections and also their sleeker design, which allows for greater space for airflow or cooling systems
  • Busbars can connect at right angles, the space saved by using busbars because significant when compared to large bundles of cables required in many projects
  • Because of their modular design busbars can deal with changing energy loads far better than traditional cables
  • Although initial material/part costs may be higher for a busbar solution in the majority of cases the labour saving plus the saving over the lifetime of the materials (such as alterations) will more than recoup that initial outlay

Within the world of electrical power distribution, Busbars are commonplace. But what is a Busbar and what does it do?

The main purpose of a Busbar is to conduct a substantial current of electricity. Typically, they are contained inside switchgear, panel boards or busway.

Rather than branching the main supply at one location, a Busbar allows new circuits to branch off anywhere along the route of the busway.

Here at PRV Engineering we not only take great pride in the quality of our Busbars, but we understand your requirements. PRV Engineering delivers when other companies can’t.

PRV Engineering’s significant investment in a new plating facility in 2013 has led to a firmer control over prices and lead times.

One of the fastest growing high precision engineering machining specialists in Europe, PRV have been trading for over 27 years. Managing director Simon Jones believes the company’s new plating facility will have a vital part to play in the future of its Busbar business.

He said; ”Our order book continues to grow and the stabilisation of our Busbar business, via the investment in our new plating facility, helps to convince our loyal clients that we are here for the long term.

“Because we are in the high voltage power industry and a lot of our products are Busbars, they either require tin-plating or silver plating for added conductivity. In the industry we find it increasingly difficult to get the service done in an adequate time and at an adequate price.

Whether someone is an independent engineering contractor or they are responsible for an entire fleet of military helicopters an effective and reliable means of working with low, high or even extremely high voltage is required. This requirement has resulted in the development of busbars.
What is a Busbar?

The versatile and flexible busbar is a thick strip of aluminum or copper that controls the flow of electricity between two points.  The very first busbar was created in the 1930’s by the British Grid System and of course, busbars have come a long way since then.

While not being the most glamorous piece of equipment, busbars work with precision to ensure that electricity is conducted safely, whether within a switchboard, distribution board or even between substations.
