The Evolution of Rail Engineering

Rail engineering has experienced profound transformations over the years, evolving into one of the most dynamic sectors in transportation. From the advent of steam engines to the introduction of high-speed rail, the industry has consistently embraced innovation to boost efficiency and enhance the passenger experience.

Contemporary rail engineering prioritises not only speed and capacity but also sustainability and environmental impact reduction. This evolution has incorporated advanced materials, automated systems, and eco-friendly technologies, firmly establishing rail transport as a cornerstone of future mobility solutions.

Imagine the railway system as an elaborate symphony – a harmonious blend of science, technology, and brilliant engineering. Or, as Alexander Graham Bell once said, “Great discoveries and improvements invariably involve the cooperation of many minds.” It’s a sector that fosters collaboration, a testament to human ingenuity. At the heart of this symphony, you’ll find railway engineering, an intriguing field combining civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering with architecture, geography, and even a sprinkle of archaeology.

High-voltage switchgear is a type of electrical circuit protection equipment that protects, regulates, and separates electrical devices. The electrical components are housed in metal enclosures where a switchgear line-up or assembly refers to a group of one or more of these structures. Since PRV Engineering specialises in high-voltage switchgear, rail product and Oil & Gas industries, here is a summary of what it entails and how it works.

PRV Engineering Ltd was first established in 1986 manufacturing pressings for the food packaging industry. Over the years, their engineering services expanded into the Railway Sector, Aerospace and Defence among others. This was largely due to a forward-thinking approach and continuous investment in staff, facility and equipment.

It all began with the introduction of jars and bottles as the requirement for their products started to decline. In 1998, PRV changed direction and moved into subcontract engineering selling their remaining presses. Two years later, in 2000, they expanded their now well-equipped 29,000 sq ft facility in Pontypool, South Wales.

Running a successful engineering company with high quality fabrication services requires knowledge, experience and continuous investment in the latest machinery. Investment in equipment and staff should be extremely high on anyone’s priority list. Quality and customer service excellence are two of the most important factors and in order to provide that, equipment and staff must be of the highest level.

Within the world of electrical power distribution, Busbars are commonplace. But what is a Busbar and what does it do?

The main purpose of a Busbar is to conduct a substantial current of electricity. Typically, they are contained inside switchgear, panel boards or busway.

Rather than branching the main supply at one location, a Busbar allows new circuits to branch off anywhere along the route of the busway.

Here at PRV Engineering we not only take great pride in the quality of our Busbars, but we understand your requirements. PRV Engineering delivers when other companies can’t.

Even though copper is the most popular choice for use in busbars, and used very often in other electrical applications because it is more resistant to rust and corrosion than other metals, this doesn’t mean that it won’t oxidize over time.

When metals oxidize, the resistance in the conductive metal will increase, requiring more power to be used to carry current along the surface. When the copper oxidizes beyond a certain point, the metal can begin to flake and fall apart.

As the economy throughout the world, and in Great Britain began to sink at the latter part of the last decade, copper thefts were on the rise. There is a direct and measurable correlation between a poor economy and copper thefts, which is tied together through a complex equation of supply and demand. While homeowners and businesses have faced the prospect of having pipes and electrical wiring stolen from their vacant properties, it has moved into more occupied space, as well as other industries.
