Carrying on from last year’s successful exhibition, Subcon 2014 (NEC, Birmingham, June 3-5) will once again host the hugely popular Engineer Conference. This year, the final keynote presentation ‘The factory of the future and the future of British Manufacturing’ will be given by Hamid Mughal, the head of global manufacturing at Rolls-Royce.

It has certainly been a busy time for Rolls-Royce. Having won offshore design and equipment orders for more than £60million, the company recently announced that it has signed an agreement to sell its Energy gas turbine and compressor business to Siemens for a £785 million cash consideration.

Now, the company has secured a contract to design and equip a large offshore support vessel for Norwegian ship owner Island Offshore. The vessel, named Island Victory, will be a multi-functional design with a flexible operational profile, and will be one of the largest vessels in Island Offshore’s fleet. The contract value to Rolls-Royce is approximately £35m.

John Knudsen, Rolls-Royce, President – Offshore, said: “Once again Island Offshore has ordered a tailor made vessel to meet current and future market needs. We truly enjoy working with this ship owner and take pride in the fact that they repeatedly choose our design team in Norway as their partner.”

Subcon 2014 – The Engineer Conference

Subcon 2014’s Engineer Conference will once again showcase some of the most compelling and inspiring examples of manufacturing technology from both the UK’s established and emerging engineering sectors.

Featuring a rich variety of speakers from industry and academia, the event provides a unique snapshot of the diversity of UK industry. It will also provide visitors with a valuable insight into the manufacturing strategies of some of our most exciting companies.

The Engineer conference sessions, which are free to attend, aim to examine the topics, ideas and disruptive trends that are driving the engineering and manufacturing agenda.

Themes covered include Industry 4.0, energy storage, advanced manufacturing techniques for jet engines, and the UK’s most ambitious, game-changing, and possibly most controversial infrastructure project, the HS2 high-speed rail line.

The latest speaker to be confirmed at the Engineer conference is Dr Alan Epstein, Pratt & Whitney’s vice-president, technology & environment, who will be flying in from the US to speak on new technologies for today’s cutting-edge jet engines.

Other keynotes include: Siemens’ divisional director for Industrial Automation, Brian Holliday, explaining the what, why and how of Industry 4.0; David Clarke, chief executive of the Energy Technologies Institute, looking at the options, challenges and prize of energy storage; Stephen Barr, head of the Manufacturing Advisory Service on Reshore UK, and the technical director of HS2 Ltd, Andrew McNaughton.
